More patients are turning to holistic and natural health options as an alternative or supplement to traditional medicine and treatments . They are increasingly aware of the effectiveness of holistic and natural approaches in regaining and maintaining overall health without many of the side effects of traditional methods. In a 2004 survey by the National Center for Health Statistics, 36% of those surveyed used some form of alternative medicine.

Natural health practitioners use a variety of specializations: herbal supplements, aromatherapy, natural nutrition, iridology, kinesiology, massage, energy work, acupuncture, acupressure and more. Opportunities for a long-term career in holistic health care are promising, especially after receiving formal training with holistic medicine, or completing a holistic health education program. The curriculum is designed to allow the student to gain the knowledge necessary to work in the alternative medicine environment. This degree requires no Lab/Shop, Externship/Internship and no licensing or certifications will be awarded.

Everglades University's Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Alternative Medicine program provides alternative medicine major courses combined with general education courses to enable the graduate to understand the integration of the mind, body, and spirit within both traditional and alternative healthcare environments. Graduates will understand the connection between nutrition and physical health, mental health, and wellness.
